When the air turns crisp and the heaters come on, your skin feels it before you do. Autumn air holds less moisture, indoor heating dries the air even more, and the routine that worked all summer can suddenly leave your face tight, flaky, and dull. The good news: you don't need a shelf of new products. A few small changes to how you cleanse, moisturize, and protect your skin will carry you comfortably through the season.
1. Switch to a gentler cleanser
Foaming cleansers that felt refreshing in July can strip your skin in October. As the weather cools, choose a cream or milky cleanser that cleans without leaving your face squeaky. That squeaky feeling is not cleanliness — it's your skin barrier asking for mercy. Wash with lukewarm water, morning and night, and pat dry instead of rubbing.
2. Moisturize on damp skin
This is the simplest trick in skincare, and it works. Apply your moisturizer within a minute or two of washing, while your skin is still slightly damp. Damp skin absorbs cream better and locks in far more water than dry skin does. If your summer lotion now feels too light, move to a richer cream for the night and keep the lighter one for mornings.
3. Don't retire the sunscreen
Clouds and cold fool many people into skipping sun protection in autumn. UV rays that age the skin are present all year, even on grey days. Keep a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher as the last step of your morning routine. Your future skin will thank you more for this habit than for any expensive serum.
4. Choose lukewarm water, not hot
A steaming shower feels wonderful on a cold morning, but hot water dissolves the natural oils that protect your skin, leaving it drier and sometimes itchy. Keep showers warm rather than hot, limit them to about ten minutes, and moisturize your body right after, just like your face.
5. Exfoliate gently, once a week
Dry, flaky patches make moisturizer sit on the surface instead of sinking in. A gentle exfoliation once a week removes that dull layer so your products can do their job. Be kind about it: a soft washcloth or a mild exfoliating product is enough. Daily scrubbing does the opposite of what you want — it damages the barrier and makes dryness worse.
6. Look after lips and hands
Lips have no oil glands of their own, so they are the first to crack when the air dries out. Keep a simple lip balm with you and apply it before you go out, not after your lips already hurt. Hands suffer too — from cold air and frequent washing. A hand cream by the sink and one in your bag will prevent the rough, sore knuckles that winter is famous for.
7. Let the night do the heavy work
Skin repairs itself while you sleep, so your evening routine matters most in the dry season. A slightly richer night cream, applied to a clean face, gives your skin hours of uninterrupted moisture. If your bedroom air is very dry, a small humidifier near the bed makes a genuine difference by morning.
Autumn skincare is not about buying more — it is about adjusting gently and early. Start these small changes now, while the weather is only beginning to turn, and your skin will stay soft, calm, and comfortable all the way to spring.
