Seattle-based freelance stylist/Pantene consultant Hallie Bowman's elbow-length hair is so fantastic that she attracts new clients just walking around town. Here, she shares her hard-won, personally tested tips for keeping her whole look healthy as it gets longer.
1. Read the back of shampoo bottles.
"You want a strengthening formula—and a little silicone, to slicken and dissolve knots if you're prone to tangles."
2. Be extra gentle.
"Use a boar-bristle brush to help distribute natural oils, never comb when your hair is wet, and use snag-free elastics."
3. Trim once every two months or so.
"Ask your stylist for a 'dusting' to get rid of split ends. If you feel confident, you can also do it yourself with sharp scissors."
4. Avoid heat.
"If you must use hot tools, find one that works fast, minimizing the damage. Air-dry your hair as much as possible; if you want volume, blow-dry—and always start with a good heat-protection product."
5. Minimize overnight breakage.
"Wrap your hair into a topknot before bed and secure with a soft scrunchie. Silk or satin pillowcases are less rough on hair (and prolong blowouts)."
6. Vitamins work.
"Most hair-growth supplements have good-for-you vitamins, too (B8 is particularly effective). And avoid crazy diets: Eating well really does make your hair stronger."
7. Deep condition.
"Once a month, I sit for 20 minutes with my hair wrapped in plastic: The heat from your head increases the efficacy of the product. I alternate traditional conditioners with emu oil—weird, but it works."
